Apparently they have a good reservoir and caprock and are now trying to figure how to acquire 200,000 tons of CO2 for a test. Either generate it on site, fit capture equipment to the old coal power plant on the island or tanker it from Snowwhite field’s process facilities.
The economic basis for the village of Longyearbyen is coal mining. The existing power plant is aging and the debate is on about building a replacement power plant with full CCS.
Can a town that exports coal really be considered carbon neutral?
